Review: Air Force One AFX Game Improvement Irons

Best Bang for the Buck Beginners Irons
There are 2 phrases that I keep hearing when I talk to beginning golfers. “Golf is Expensive” and “Golf is Hard.” I’m sure there are some other phrases dealing with time and such, but those 2 phrases are what keep many people from picking up the game of golf or sticking with it. Air Force One Golf created a set of irons that will help a beginner on both fronts. These might just be the best bang for the buck in beginners irons.
The Air Force One AFX game improvement irons are aimed at the beginning golfer or golfers looking for a little more bang out of their irons for a little less cash.  There are some lower priced “box” sets at Walmart or even your local golf retail store, but you get what you pay for too.  If you want a little more performance yet not paying too much, these are going to fit that happy medium.  The set consists of 2 hybrids for long irons and then 5-7 iron in a Nitrogen charged hollow iron, and 8-pw in deep undercut irons.  They are available in steel or graphite shafts in 3 flexes.  If you really are just beginning, I say you just need this set and maybe 2 or 3 other clubs.  A driver, and putter and maybe an extra wedge.

The AFO AFX Game-Improvement irons are kind of what you’d expect; big heads, big off-set and very forgiving.  They like to hit high and straight.  The hybrids-7iron have some real pop off the face, and the 8-pw have the deep undercut which again causes the ball to go high and land soft.  You get a hollow feel off all the faces and pretty much everywhere on the face.  Their looks are like many game-improvement irons, there is some badging in the cavity done in black plastic and simple AFO logoing.  The hybrids are stellar looking in matte black.  The Apollo steel shafts in the irons are very lightweight and felt very good.  The hybrids had Fujikura graphite shafts in them which felt stable and smooth.

While personally the AFO AFX Game-improvement irons are not a fit to my game or my eye, they did put a good smack on the ball.  I let a couple of my High School golfers hit them and they smashed them.  They were a really good fit for a couple of their games.  The Nitrogen in the long irons and hybrid really gave them some needed distance for their slower swing speeds.  They also are used to hitting the big offset heads which fit their eyes nicely.  I was impressed by how nicely the hybrids set up and how solid they felt.  I was getting good distance out of them and hit them very high for soft landings.  The 5-iron -7-iron were long too with pretty low spin, but lots of height.  I think the same was true for the short irons.  I hit  the whole set higher than normal, had more roll out than I’m used too and on average they were about one club longer than I normally hit.

There are cheaper golf clubs out there and there are better golf clubs out there, but AFO AFX Game-Improvement irons hit a great middle point of high quality and performance without having to spend too much.  They offer one of the best bangs for the buck, especially for beginning golfers.
