COBRA KING FORGED TEC IRONS – KEY POINTS
  • ℹ️  About The new Cobra King Forged Tec iron is a beautiful players iron that has some serious distance.

  • ✅  Pros Long distance irons with stunning looks and a good forged feel.

  • ⛔  Cons Slightly less forgiving.

  • ⛳  Verdict Cobra really has a winner with these irons. They are beautiful to look at in the bag or on the turf and they offer extra distance.

A new category of irons was created a few years ago called players distance irons. While both categories have existed for years, it wasn’t until recently that they were combined into a hybrid category between the two. These clubs are known for their minimal offset, thinner lines, yet must be at least 1 club longer than “standard” distance. While golf companies have been pushing this category, I can’t say I’ve really wanted or liked what was being offered. To me they still felt more distance iron than players iron, until now. The new Cobra King Forged Tec iron is a beautiful players iron that has some serious distance. I’m impressed with how Cobra finally make a distance iron look, feel and play more like a players iron with that boost of distance.
The Cobra King Forged Tec Irons have an almost “blade” look to them.  They don’t have your typical visible cavity that is standard on most distance irons.  They have minimal offset and a thin top line.  While still not as compact as true blades, these are about as close as you will get to a blade looking iron with tec and distance.  These really are a beautiful set of irons in the bag.  They look more players iron than they play.

The Cobra King Forged Tec irons rely on a hollow design infused with foam microspheres.  This is key to creating distance because the face needs to flex without caving in as well as sound and feel need to be aided by the foam so that it doesn’t “ring” at impact.  Cobra pulls it off beautifully in these irons.  While they aren’t as pure as a solid metal blade, their slightly higher pitch at impact is still within the acceptable range for a players irons.  I find the sound more noticeable not so much at impact but as the club clang around in the bag, their bumping together is higher pitched.

Another new technology in the Cobra King Forged Tec irons is what they call PWRSHELL.  Basically it is a forged face that wraps around the sole of the club.  This creates a huge sweet spot as well as high launch and tons of forgiveness.  When this tech is paired with the other elements of the design, it offers high launch and long distance in a compact yet forgiving head.  It really is part of what defines these irons as players distance irons.

Cobra also utilizes Tungsten again in this iron head as they have been now for years to manipulate the CG to pull it towards the toe, while also keeping it low and behind the sweet spot.  The use of Tungsten in the Cobra King Forged Tec irons helps launch the ball high and straight.  Because they have minimal offset there is still some workablity in these heads.  While you aren’t going to hit massive hooks or slices with them, you can manipulate the flight to move right or left.  You are still going to hit the ball high and it is going to carry a full club longer or more, there is a level of control not common to distance irons.

The Cobra King Forged Tec irons are long, these are at least a club longer than my regular distances.  This did takes some getting used to in a couple different ways.  My first round with these clubs I hit them incredibly straight, but didn’t pick up any distance.  I was so confused, but at the same time felt like my swing wasn’t very good that day since I kept chunking the heel of the club.  As my rounds progressed I felt like I started swinging better with less heel chunks.  I hadn’t looked closely at the specs until I noticed they are more upright than my irons.  That is why I kept loosing distance by hitting the heel first.  Once I made a few adjustments, the distance was way long.  I started hitting them over my target all the time.  So dialing back a club became the norm with these irons.  I like how these came in a 4-iron through GW set because the added distance needs to get filled by an extra wedge.

The Cobra King Forged Tec irons have looks, feel, distance and Arccos.  This has been a staple of Cobra clubs for 3 years now.  I love Arccos and have found it be very beneficial to my game.  I like that it is embedded in all the grips of Cobra clubs so I only need a couple screw-in sensors for the other clubs in my bag.  While they used to include them in the box, now you have to order the extra ones.  I can understand this change, why send out a bunch of sensors if people aren’t going to use them anyways.  Arccos really is a “free” bonus with these clubs that should be perfect for the golfer choosing these irons.

Cobra King Forged Tec 8 Iron Stats

Data from Flightscope Xi Tour Launch Monitor

 Spin: 7058 rpms

 Launch Angle: 29.4*

 Club Head Speed: 85.1 mph

Dispersion: 3.0 yds

 Ball Speed: 115.2 mph

 Total Distance: 165.1 yds

 Carry Distance: 157.8 yds

The Cobra King Forged Tec Irons have stock KBS $-Taper lite shafts.  I went with C-Taper lite shafts to bring the spin and launch down just a touch which still made these plenty long and high, but just a little more penetrating.  Think the lite shafts are used to create a little more speed in the swing.  The overall combination of head and shaft work well.  The Lamkin grips that top of the club are nice especially with the embedded Arccos.

Summary

Cobra really has a winner with these irons.  They are beautiful to look at in the bag or on the turf and they offer extra distance.  The Cobra King Forged Tec irons fit a fairly wide range of golfers with their extra distance, ample forgiveness and good looks.  Their relatively minimal offset is going to keep them out of a slicers hand, but there are plenty of those irons out there.  Cobra made beautiful distance irons.
