Review: Ping i200 Irons

i Is For Everyone
OK, I know my spelling isn’t right, but the new i200 irons impressed me how well they could be a great fit for such a wide range of golfers. Often I review clubs by playing them 5 rounds in my bag and then write about what I found. This time however I added some rounds on these irons by some other golfers with different handicaps. Since moving to AZ I have more visitors that come to play golf, especially in the spring. They wanted to try these irons during their rounds, so I thought I would include their results in this review. I learned that Ping i200 irons are for everyone.
While I don’t understand Ping’s new naming, i-blades, G-irons, G-max and i200, I will say I’m super impressed with the recent offerings.  I love the i-blades for the player and the G-irons for the game-improvement category.  The i200 irons are replacements for the i-irons.  They fill a similar gap between i-blades and G-irons.  I think they fit an incredibly wide range of handicaps.  The improved looks and added distance will certainly make them desirable for many golfer, regardless of handicap.

Ping irons have always had a distinct look, but most recently they have made them as clean and classic looking as possible, while still including technical advances in each new iron.  The i200s look great in the bag with their simple cavity, i200 badging and hydropearl finish.  They are fairly compact in appearance, but when you set them down behind the ball, they don’t look too demanding or too difficult to hit.  I found they appeal to a single digit handicap as well as high double digit handicap golfers.  Appeal is one thing, but what about performance?

The Ping i200 irons were a good fit for my AZ game.  While I still fall under a single digit handicap, I haven’t been able to practice as much as I did when I was coaching high school golf.  These offer more forgiveness and a higher/straighter ball flight than say the i-blades.  While I still gravitate toward having the i-blades in my bag, it is hard to deny the benefits of the i200s in my bag.  The real deal with these irons came when I let my visiting golfers play them.  They were blown away with how easy they were to hit and how forgiving they were for non-game improvement irons.  They tend to play GI irons, but I think these might have convinced them to switch, at least to the Ping i200 irons.

The Ping i200 irons perform very nicely on the course.  The long irons are just big enough and have enough offset to make them easy to hit.  They are plenty long because of their thin faces, yet have nice stopping power so that long par 3s are very manageable with these in play.  The mid irons hit fairly high, but have good distance, even into the wind, they didn’t move or lose much carry.  The short irons are very precise, especially the distance was right on target so that the progression was very natural all the way through the entire set.  I really liked the gapping iron to iron.  The Ping i200s have a nice feel at impact too.  Ping continues to tune this in on each new generation of iron.  These are solid with a nice click at impact.  They have also done a nice job of expanding the sweet spot so that they feel great even if you miss dead center.

Ping i200 might be one of the most versatile irons made right now.  Watching a mid-handicap golfer hit them well during a casual round and then watching a tour pro win with them in the bag is proof they can work for everyone.   They offer adequate forgiveness yet, compact looks and playability in order to appeal to a large segment of the golfing population.  My stats with these in the bag were very good and I saw other golfer with a variety of handicaps have similar results.
