REVIEW: Srixon ZX Utility Iron

Can a 3-Iron be Your Most Consistent Club??

What is your favorite club in the bag? Is it also you most consistent club? They often go hand in hand because the club you like the most is also the club you hit the best. For some people it is a driver, others the putter, and some the 7 iron. But how many golfers love their 3-iron? I’ll be honest, for years I didn’t even carry a 3-iron or a 4-iron because I hated them so much. Usually it was because I hit them so poorly and inconsistently that I yanked them out of the bag. I don’t see a reason to carry a club that hurts your scores or that I never hit. The Srixon ZX utility iron however changed all that. It has been in my bag now for over 5 rounds and I’ve only hit good shots with it. I think it might be the most consistent club in my bag.

The Srixon ZX Utility Iron is the best looking hybrid/utility iron on the market. There are some nice ones, but I don’t think there are too many arguments that Srixon knocked it out of the park with this design. At first glance in pictures I thought it was a blade. The hollow body is compact and clean from every angle. They could easily make an entire set of these and you’d think player rather than game improvement. The offset is minimal and the shape is clean. This club really appeals to the better golfer, especially as a long iron/hybrid alternative.

The Srixon ZX Utility Iron isn’t just about looks, it performs. I’ve been back and forth over the last couple years whether I play a hybrid or the Z U85 utility iron. I think this may have solved the mystery. This club is the most consistent club I have in the bag. Honestly I’ve hit 1 bad shot with it so far; that is range time and on-course play. Even that was a chunk that went straight, just not full distance. Otherwise every single shot has been straight and consistent distance. This is a 210 yard club. I haven’t been able to squeeze out much more than a couple yards extra, but I’ve also never come up short. It is just repeat, repeat, repeat: straight 210 yards. Why the Srixon ZX Utility Iron works so well I can’t completely pinpoint. The Recoil 95 F4 shaft pairs perfectly with the 20* 3-iron head which launches easily, the spin is in a consistent middle range, the feel is an amazing combo of pop and solid, the v-sole is compact and interacts with the turf nicely. It is one of those combos that just plain works shot after shot.

It looks like a blade, feels amazing and consistently hits the ball straight and on distance. I would have never guessed that a 3-iron could be so consistent, but Srixon pulled it off and I’m really happy with it.
