REVIEW: Titleist TSi3 Driver

It is Tour Speed improved!!
2 years ago Titleist shifted their driver name and emphasis to create more speed.  They accomplished that with a couple of really good drivers.  But there was still some room for improvement.  Spin has been an issue for me and Titleist drivers over the years, requiring me to go with a lower lofted head to keep the numbers in optimal range.  The new TSi3 driver is a little lower spin and lower launching so I could get into my normal lofted head while still maintaining ideal spin.  The real improvement is the face technology that creates a huge sweet spot for speed everywhere on the face.  The looks are improved to create one of the best looking driver on the market too.  All-in-all Titleist set out to improve their Tour Speed drivers and they did.
Typically I’d do a fitting with Titleist, but COVID-19 has made that a little more difficult, so I used their online driver selector tool and got  TSi3 as the better fit of the two models.  I went with a 9.0* TSi3 with Tensei Raw White 65g stiff flex shaft for the lowest spinning and launching combo.  While in-person fittings are always the best, if you have a good handle on your game and use some of the tools and resources available to you, getting the right combo can happen too.
The Titleist TSi3 Driver boasts some new technology in the face, called ATI 425.  This specialty titanium creates a hotter face and a bigger sweet spot.  I found the face to be sneaky hot.  What I mean by that is when you don’t hit one dead center you have an expectation of lost distance, but when you see the on-course results of the same distance off the tee that you’d normally get with a center strike, you are pleasantly surprised by the sneaky distance.  This really is the key to modern drivers; do they improve your average distance by making your misses longer?  The Titleist TSi3 does because the face is an improvement on Tour Speed.

The Titleist TSi3 Driver looks about as pure, sleek and awesome as any driver I’ve ever seen; it even looks fast.  I love the almost entirely black body, face, sole, etc.  The blend of gloss and matte are excellent.  It has a blend of traditional shape with a modern “tech” look.  From the top the shape of this head is traditional and compact.  There is minimal distractions on the crown which is very nice.  The deep face of this driver has a different line pattern than most drivers, but frames the ball really nicely on the tee.  The Titleist TSi3 is an improvement in this category as well over the previous version.

The Titleist TSi3 Driver performs on the course.  It is low spin long!  I liked the lower launch and lower spin of the TSi3 which has always been my struggle with Titleist drivers of the past.  I was never a huge fan of a 8.5* lofted driver, more mentally than anything.  I like hitting this 9.0*.  I know it is only a .5 degree, but it just seems better.  The flight is very flat which I also appreciate.  It launches quickly, a touch lower, but then just holds that trajectory the entire flight and then bounds down the fairway running.  The low spin is evident in both ball flight that goes straight and significant roll out.

  • Spin: 2005 rpms
  • Launch Angle: 12.1*
  • Dispersion: 6.1 yds
  • Club Head Speed: 106.1 mph
  • Ball Speed: 157.8 mph
  • Total Distance:  298.7 yds
  • Carry Distance:  278.9 yds

The Titleist TSi3 is not the most forgiving driver with flight direction.  If you need help hitting the ball straight, go with the TSi2.  But face forgiveness is huge with this driver meaning anything that hits the face of this club is going to go a long ways.  Think of it this way, as the path controls hooks and draws, as long as  proper swing path happens, you don’t need to hit it “on the screws” to get distance.  The new ATI 425 titanium technology used in the face expands the sweet spot and keeps the entire face HOT.  So at the end of the day, if you have a good swing, the club face will reward you with distance, even if you miss the sweet spot.  This is really where I noticed that average distance going up.  Consistently long off the tee even, when I knew I missed the center of the face.  It is sneaky long on those miss hits.  The fine tuning options can help dial in a consistent flight pattern too with their new sliding rear weight and their Surefit hosel.  I didn’t really need much adjustment from stock to get great results.

The Titleist TSi3 driver is an improved driver that is fast, looks great and long because of the face forgiveness.  While I’d still suggest taking Titleist up on their in-person fittings, you can use their selector tool and some of your own personal swing knowledge to get the right club during COVID-19 restrictions.  I’m impressed by this low spin, low launch driver that is sneaky long even on miss hits.   This might be one of the most popular drivers in 2021.
